Once upon a time, tree surgery was completed almost exclusively by unqualified people who were fearless about climbing trees and “dropping” the tops out of them.  People talked about “topping” the crowns out of large trees and boasted of the sheer physical strength needed to do the work.  The trees were sometimes butchered, the accident level was higher than nowadays and old tree surgeons often had debilitating physical injuries as a result of the way they worked.

These days there’s a greater recognition that working smarter is both safer and more efficient.  So while a Craft Arborist (a practical, operational tree surgeon to the rest of us) does indeed need to have the required physical fitness and stamina for such a physical job, availability and use of modern kit and equipment really helps.   It’s not always possible to use a MEWP like this (if, for example, there isn’t the access to get one in), but all of our Arborists are qualified to operate Mobile Elevated Working Platforms like this one. The Maples in this line were all pruned under stunning blue skies at the end of January this year.
