Like most tree surgeons, it’ a bit of a hazard of the job that wherever we go on holiday, we’re drawn to looking at the trees!  Whether we’re trying to identify unusual ones, marvelling at huge ones, exploring gardens full of native ones, remarking on how much more tolerant other countries are about mangement of theirs, or diagnosing issues and problems with trees, we can’t seem to let go!

This year, we had a short break in the lovely coastal Medieval town of Sibenik in Croatia.

All of the above tree-spotting activity was ongoing throughout the week.  We particularly enjoyed the living history in the ancient Olive trees and the wonderful old pollards of much larger trees like this Mulberry below.

This one was set in the middle of the tiny narrow streets and squares, pruned to provide shade and greenery for many, many generations, and a place to sit and stare.  It does look a bit over-hairy and is probably about due for a repollard to remove any crown weight building up on the decayed cut points which might make the tree unsafe, and so that it fits back in it’s place.

What a lovely place this would be to work!
