This month, we’re returning to a the theme of training in the business.
Since we started, we’ve had a rolling programme of training and been pleased to support the career development of a number of young tree surgeons through a mix of formal apprenticeships, externally accredited NPTC, Llantra and City and Guilds training courses, and on-the-job training.
This year is no different and we’re pleased to say that JB, our newest trainee, is making good, steady progress in his development as a climber. He came to us having qualified with his Level 2 Arboricultural Certificate from Sparsholt college. His focus now is on building his technical climbing experience, consolidating what he learnt at college in live daily work, and on working equally alsongside more experienced team members, his mentors, to deliver the work schedule. As a trainee, JB doesn’t always climb every day. But as there is such a variety in the work, he has the opportunity everyday to contribute to the planning of the role, the site specific risk assessment, and to the wide range of tree surgery tasks working on the ground and at height. Team working, planning, judgement, risk assessment and communication are just as important as the technical climbing skills in the role, and JB has already been able to support a work experience student who has been learning with us for a few months. There is a shortage of young people in the Horticultual industry in general, and occasionally we feel this when we are recruiting. But with such a wide range of paths to follow, it’s a great career for a young person who loves the outdoors!
