We do love to talk about the weather, and, writing this blog just one week into January, when we should be shivering in bleak winter conditions, it’s difficult not to get over-excited about early signs of Spring!
During one of our long regular walks between Christmas and New Year (we call these our “walking AGM”, when we do all our future business planning), we saw – and smelled – many signs of what can only be somewhat confused plants. The mild weather has brought on new growth and amongst the catkins, daffodils and snowdrops, there were roses out, flowering shrubs filling the air with scent and blossom on the trees.
Luckily, most trees growing here at home can withstand much of the confused weather, but it will be interesting to see what impact the warm conditions have on the timing of autumn later in the year. With the exception of fruiting trees, most pruning can usually be done at any time, and most species of new tree will value the warm, wet soil conditions.
